About the Position
As MPU builds out its Campus pilot program, the Campus Community Lead is responsible for building a national digital community of students that offers trainings, discussions with journalists and organizers, and collaboration through a moderated Discord platform. Additionally, they will plan and execute virtual MPU Campus Program events to funnel students into the program. The Campus Community Lead will have a proven track record of building, growing, and maintaining online communities and leveraging digital tools to educate, train, and mobilize young people at a national scale.
Core Responsibilities:
- Work with the Campus Program Manager to ideate, plan, and host MPU virtual events with the goal of energizing and channeling students into MPU’s Discord, trainings, and MPU virtual and in-person campus events;
- Develop and manage a calendar of virtual events (panels, speaker series, organizing trainings, policy education) across key issue areas;
- Identify and recruit mission-aligned policy experts, progressive politicians, effective organizers, and creators to co-host MPU Campus Program virtual events;
- Design and oversee a Discord for students to connect with one another and discuss corporate greed on college campuses, access MPU trainings, and plug into MPU campus actions, events, etc;
- Build ladders of engagement to deepen and retain student involvement in the program;
- Develop a positive and proactive Discord culture that allows students to discuss corporate greed as it relates to various issue areas and cultural topics;
- Develop and iterate moderation protocols for Discord;
- Prepare guest speakers prior to virtual events;
- Strategize and execute new ways to engage students who enter the MPU student community;
- Work closely with the MPU Campus Program Manager and Social Team to strategize social media content promoting virtual events;
- Create monthly reports on virtual event attendance;
- Monitor and report on Discord growth, engagement, culture, and retention, adjusting moderation and programming strategies accordingly;
- Develop and implement strategies to recruit young people from More Perfect Union’s various social media channels to join the campus program;
- Engage with students on More Perfect Union’s social channels, soliciting feedback on content and ideas for future coverage
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet expected deadlines
- Maintain high standard of work in a nimble, fast paced environment
- Perform other duties as assigned
Experience/Qualifications:
- At least 3 years of experience building and maintaining large online communities through distributed organizing;
- Demonstrated experience planning and hosting virtual events with hundreds of participants or more;
- Technical expertise specifically with Discord features required;
- Technical proficiency with video conferencing platforms (i.e. Zoom);
- Comfortable moderating large groups of people online and facilitating large group discussions on Zoom;
- Significant experience recruiting people to campaigns using social media and webinars;
- Passion for, and substantial knowledge of, national politics and economic justice issues;
- Existing relationships with policy experts, labor leaders, and advocacy organizations to join virtual events;
- People-person, dynamic, highly-responsive, strong ability to switch gears and handle multiple projects at once;
- Self-starter with ability to work independently while collaborating closely with MPU staff;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to engage diverse audiences authentically;
- Connected to working class organizing efforts across various issue areas and regions;
- Strong pulse on Gen-Z culture, motivations, interests, frustrations;
- Previous experience working with students and/or youth organizations;
- Ability to handle conflict and difficult moderation situations with composure and sound judgment;
- Comfortable with trial-and-error. Willing to test new event formats and pivot based on what resonates with participants;
- Available full-time hours and able to excel in a remote/work from home environment.
